A Day Overflowing with Goodness

Sweet Surprises and a Dash of Gratitude

Today was one of those days where “Something Good” wasn’t just a moment—it was the whole day! Some days, finding the good can feel like a treasure hunt, but today, the good things practically lined up and waved hello.

We’re all settled in Winston Salem for the next seven days at an RV park that feels like an old friend. We’ve stayed here many times before, and there’s something so comforting about returning to a place that’s familiar, cozy, and trustworthy. It’s like the park itself is happy to see us again.

The day started in the best way possible: with family! We got to surprise five of our grandchildren by meeting them at our favorite bakery, Bobby Boy Bakeshop. (Well, Baby Jack probably wasn’t surprised—he’s only five months old and has only seen us once—but he was a sight for sore eyes for Chris and me!) Bobby Boy’s chocolate croissants are legendary, and our grandsons always ask for “the croissants with the flags on the top.” Each one comes with a little blue and white chocolate flag, and it’s become a sweet tradition for us.

Bobby Boy has grown so much since our first visit years ago. They’ve opened a second location that’s absolutely stunning—it feels like stepping into a European bakery dream! And now, they’ve added Grandpa Joe’s Slaberia, a focaccia-style pizza restaurant. They mill their own flour and use fresh, local ingredients, which is right up my alley. I can’t wait to try it! There will definitely be photos (and maybe a few pizza reviews) in our weekly newsletter. Subscribe here to follow along.

On a different note, there was a bit of excitement next door to our Whittle Bird Coffee + Kitchen. A fire broke out at Belly of the Beast BBQ. Our baker, Iris, was there at the time, finishing out September with custom pastry orders. Thankfully, the fire department responded quickly, and the local fairgrounds generously offered their refrigerators for our cold items while we waited for the power to come back. Ten hours later, Iris was back in business! The BBQ place will be closed for a little while, but from what we hear, it shouldn’t be too long before they’re up and running again.

Today’s “Something Good” was sharing my favorite pastries with some of my favorite people—and knowing that the fire was contained quickly with minimal damage. Prayers were answered, and hearts are full.

Here’s to days that overflow with good things, big and small!
