Today was a quiet one spent mostly at the RV with Harvey. He’s gradually improving, though keeping him calm is still a challenge. Chris headed to the shop to take care of more last-minute things as we prepare to leave in just three days. It’s hard to believe the move is so close, but there’s a sense of peace and readiness now.

After a pretty uneventful day, Chris and I had the chance to try a new spot for dinner in Hampden, Maine. We were honored to be invited to the soft opening by Caleb, our former chef at Whittle Bird. Caleb was only with us for a short time, but he became such a big part of our story, and it means a lot to be a small part of his.

When Caleb first joined us, he was just 19, coming from a local brewery kitchen that had recently closed. During his time at Whittle Bird, I watched him pull off full dinners for over 30 people, serving five different courses. We worked well together, even though he arrived during one of the most difficult times for me—when I was exhausted and out of my element, running a kitchen with only part-time help. Not many young people impress me, but Caleb did. He has a tough exterior, but underneath, he has a big heart. I’m my own toughest critic, especially when it comes to baking, and whenever I doubted myself, Caleb was always there with encouragement. He may not have realized it, but his support meant a lot during a very hard time.

On a lighter note, if Caleb happens to read this—thanks for all the help in the kitchen, for keeping me on my toes, for challenging me, and for occasionally testing my patience LOL :). It always felt more like having family around than just another employee, and Chris and I are truly glad we got to know you.

Now, Caleb is working at Marsh Island Kitchen, and there’s no doubt he’ll do great things. The dinner tonight was amazing, and the place was beautiful. We’re even planning to go back one more time before we leave, this time with friends.

Today’s something good is the chance to see Caleb thriving in his new job and to see him one more time before we head off on our next adventure.
