Travel Day #3

Plans Changed, Buc-ee’s, and Family Just Ahead

Travel Day #3 was supposed to be our second-to-last travel day, and in true Chris style, as we were leisurely going through our morning routine—thinking we had a nice, easy three-hour trip ahead—he suddenly says, “Want to just drive all the way through today?”

Cue the internal planner alarm bells! Instantly, a million thoughts raced through my mind: What about the RV park I spent all of that time researching for tonight? What if the RV park in Winston Salem doesn’t have a spot available early? And what about all the other little details that keep a planner’s mind spinning? But Chris had one thing on his mind that trumped all my worries: grandchildren! And honestly, after about two seconds of thinking, I was on board too.

I’ll admit, I was a little disappointed to skip our next destination, Candy Hill RV Park in Virginia. I may or may not have chosen this one solely because the logo is a candy cane (huge fan of all things Christmas here). But after a little research, I discovered that the park isn’t Christmas-themed at all—it’s actually named after a family dog. That made it a little easier to let go!

The drive was long, but we made it to Winston Salem a little after 5:30pm. Along the way, Chris got to stop at a Buc-ee’s Travel Center. If you’ve never heard of Buc-ee’s, the only way to describe it is: if Walmart Supercenter and Target teamed up to open a travel stop, this would be it. It’s crazy big, has a little bit of everything like Walmart, but is meticulously clean and organized like Target. When you walk in, it smells like the local fair thanks to the roasted nuts that hit you right at the door. There is a little bit of everything including a large clothing section, lots of street fair style food, souvenirs and the list goes on!!

Now, Buc-ee’s isn’t exactly my favorite spot (couldn’t find an organic section to save my life—LOL), but I have to admit, they really do have the cleanest restrooms in America. That, I can get behind!

We’ll be in North Carolina for a full week before heading to South Carolina to start our n
