Something Good

Because every day holds a little good—if we look for it.

"This is the beginning of a new day You have been given this day to use as you will. You can waste it or use it for good. What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever. In its place is something that you have left behind . . . Let it be something good." - Author Unknown

Many years ago, we ran a handmade sign business on Etsy. Out of all the signs I created, one of my absolute favorites still hangs in Whittle Bird Coffee + Kitchen. The quote on it—author unknown—struck a chord with me the first time I read it. It was a powerful reminder of how precious life is and how every day offers a chance to make a difference.

I painted several versions of that sign and sold them, but I kept the very first one for myself. For a long time, it hung in our dining room, where we’d see it every morning at breakfast. It was a daily reminder of what a gift each day truly is. When we opened our little coffee shop, I decided to hang the sign there so its message could reach even more people. It felt too meaningful to keep to myself.

Although I don’t see the sign every day anymore, its message is etched in my heart. Lately, life has felt especially hectic and overwhelming, and I realize I’ve lost sight of that simple wisdom. So, I’m making a commitment to journal here every day, even if it’s just a small note. I want to end each post with “something good,” because no matter how tough things get, there’s always something positive to be found. If you’re reading this, I hope you’ll join me—maybe even share your own “something good” in the comments. Good things are meant to be shared, and together we can bring more joy into the world.

Today has been a bit challenging as we pack up our house and prepare to move back down South. It’s bittersweet—we’re excited to be closer to family, but we’ll miss the friends we’ve made here. Our customers have been so supportive about our move, even though they’re sad to see us go. Whittle Bird has become a special gathering place in town, and we’re working hard to find someone who can carry on what we started. With the sale of our house closing in just a week and so much still uncertain, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But taking the time to write this helps me choose faith over fear. I truly believe everything happens for a reason.

Before I sign off, I want to share “something good.” Today, in the midst of all the chaos, a customer told me that we’ve made a real difference in the community and that we’ll be dearly missed. Every kind word from our customers means so much, but this one stood out. He’s someone I’d describe as a “tough guy,” but as he spoke, I saw tears in his eyes. As hard as this journey in Maine has been, those words made it all worthwhile. That’s my “something good” for today—a beautiful reminder of how much kind words can mean
