Sunday Morning Pancakes
A Sweet Pause Amidst Life’s Big Changes

Today marks the first Sunday Chris and I have had off since we opened our brick-and-mortar shop over a year ago. As we begin to transition and prepare for our move, we’ve decided to alter our hours, allowing ourselves two days off in a row. The difference was immediate—we actually got things accomplished today!
I slept in until 4:30am! I know that sounds a little ridiculous, but it sure beats waking up at 2:00am. I woke with an excitement I haven’t felt in a long time. Before we opened Whittle Bird and life became a whirlwind, Sunday morning pancakes were our tradition. Today, I got up, made my coffee, and actually had the luxury of sipping it slowly while watching the sunrise.
I have a recipe book from one of my favorite authors that I bought right before we opened our shop, but I’d barely had a chance to look at it. This morning, I finally flipped through its pages and found an amazing recipe for Bacon Pancakes with Bourbon Maple Syrup. Do I need to say more?
Leisurely, I made these incredible pancakes, taking my time to jot down recipe tweaks and snap photos for our new website, Whittle Bird at Home. Our kitchen is a bit of a disaster right now—boxes everywhere as we pack and prepare to move to South Carolina—but none of that mattered today. I just got to bake and create, with no pressure. I even cut the recipe in half since it’s just the two of us—a huge change from the rushed mornings of baking as much as possible and hurrying to get the shop open.
At one point, the sun was shining through the window onto my recipe book, and I had to capture the moment with a photo. It honestly felt magical. I wanted to bottle up that feeling. I know we won’t have many more mornings in Maine, and I’ll truly miss the sunrises, but today I wasn’t thinking about what I’d miss—I was just in the moment.
I thought to myself, “This is my Something Good today,” and it happened before most people were even awake. The rest of the day was a whirlwind of packing and organizing. It was hot and exhausting, but we made a lot of progress!
So, for today, my “Something Good” is simply “Sunday Morning Pancakes.” I think I need a lot more of this in my life.
Signing off for today!
